I recently graduated with a BA in English, and I know generally what I want to be doing but it's very broad: help people and/or animals. That seems easy enough but a huge problem that I've been encountering is that no one wants to pay me at all or anything close to a livable wage. I feel a strong calling to work for non profit organizations that focus on passions of mine, such as veganism, sustainability, cleaning up the earth around, zero waste living and so on, but they run off strictly off volunteer work. And while I love volunteering, I need to be paid a livable wage eventually. All the positions that are paid decently within non profits do not interest me, like running the organization or having "big wig" responsibilities, which is not an area of work that I enjoy at all or thrive in.
Along with this, I have been trying to get some jobs freelancing as a proofreader/editor/writer off of UpWork, but am not really having any luck because I lack experience and a portfolio. My experience lies in academic writing and research, but again, people are looking for freelancers who have years of experience. When I am chosen to work on a project, I'm being paid pennies. It is SO frustrating and I'm starting to really reach my ropes end and I haven't even had a job since I graduated. I'm struggling to find solutions that I deeply enjoy and that pay me well. Sometimes I feel as though my interests or ideal career goals change every day - which makes sense thinking back on my college experience as to why it took so long to pick a major, why I never did any internships in a certain area.... I CANNOT DECIDE and when I do, I change my mind very quickly. My parents think that I'm being too selective and picky in my job search, but is it so wrong that I don't want to do personally meaningless, unfulfilling work at a business that does not further my personal goals and desires?
My question is, how do I find meaningful work in an area that I want to be in but also provides a livable wage?
If you have any helpful comments or company suggestions, please post them below. I am so grateful. Thank you!
