I just finished up my first year of college at a target school and I’m planning on doing a sociology major (basically hoping to spin sociology statistics in interviews/applications to pretend like I understand math because I would die in a ~real~ math class at my college).
I did a public relations internship this past semester and LOVED it, the only thing I’m concerned with is the low starting pay of PR careers. I’m also doing two marketing internships this summer, one at a non-profit and one with a real estate investment startup. (My friends are encouraging me to quit the latter to have time for myself, but I thought it would be important to have experience in a financially focused space).
Most of my peers are looking to do consulting or investment banking for the high salary. Consulting sounds appealing to me, but I don’t have the quant background and I’m not in any of the (very cutthroat) consulting groups on campus and don’t really want to join them (they’re hard to even get in). I do work for a Gen Z marketing consulting firm right now, however, and really enjoy that, but it’s more in line with my marketing/PR background than traditional management consulting. My GPA as of right now is mostly made of A- grades, nothing super outstanding compared to my more competitive friends.
Would I stand a chance trying to get recruited for consulting analyst positions or should I stick with PR or marketing and rely on moving up? Between PR and marketing, which field typically results in quicker promotions? Thanks so much for reading!!
