First, I would like to provide some context to so people may understand the situation better.
I've been attending a career training program to become a web developer and started looking for jobs before I graduated (graduated on Jan 18). A few recruiters contacted me but only one had a job available. The recruiter told me the job was for a Java developer with AngularJS and React experience. The career program taught Microsoft's .NET framework. In other words, I was trained on similar technology but not exactly what the job requirements called for. Because of this, and the fact that it's an entry-level position, the recruiter offered me a pay rate lower than my salary range and without benefits. I'm desperate for a job so I agreed to their terms.
In the following weeks I had a phone interview and in-person interview with the employer that hired the recruiting company. The employer seems pleased with both interviews but they haven't reached a decision yet.
Now this is where things get tricky. My class gave a presentation in front of a few recruiters and employers for our final project. My classmates and I had the opportunity to speak with the recruiters and employers and learned about open positions they had to offer. Everyone I spoke to offered a pay rate within my salary range and claimed they would offer benefits too. I have a phone interview set up later this week with one employer and waiting for a job description from a recruiter.
Hypothetical situation: Let's say I'm offered a position through the lower pay recruiter. I want to continue working with the other recruiters to try to get a higher paying position with benefits. Here's some questions I have in mind:
- Should I let the lower pay recruiter know that I'm actively looking for higher paid positions with benefits?
- Should I bluff and ask for higher pay? I doubt I'd get benefits but if I could increase the pay rate then getting my own benefits wouldn't be as bad.
- Could/would the lower pay recruiter call my bluff and withdraw the job offer?
- If I did take the job then was offered one of the better positions, how should I let the employer, a small startup company, know that I would be leaving them after only a couple weeks?
If anybody has any advice or experience in this sort of situation, please let me know. Thank you!
