Should I take this contract-to perm out of state job in Manhattan?

This opportunity came about just a few weeks ago for a pretty interesting job in my field and experience working as a contractor for a large global bank. A staffing agency found my info online and contacted me about it. They (and client) were having a hard time finding someone qualified.

I did two phone interviews and last Friday I was offered the role within 30 minutes of my last interview. I’d be W2 with the staffing agency for six months. The recruiter and account manager reiterated that the client’s position request said the intent is to convert to be permanent employee of the client. Obviously I can’t guarantee that.

The kicker is the job is located in Manhattan. I’m trying to find out about any remote work. I currently live about six hours away in a low-moderate cost of living area. I own a house and have four small kids. I like visiting NYC but I’m not sure I want to live there or have a 90 commute everyday.

The offered salary is $135,000 year and no relocation assistance. I’d almost have to pay for a mortgage and apartment for the time being until I could move my family out there and afford a new house. I would need to sell my current one before buying a new house and I don’t exactly live in a hot real estate market. Plus my kids love our school district and thrive in it.

My wife and I had this upcoming 3-5 year plan where we build our own house on some acreage and I work 100% remote. This job would pretty much cancel that though.

I do hate my current job (I have been actively looking since September) and I appreciate this offer, but I also don’t want to take any job anywhere.

Anyone have an opinion? Maybe help me change mine?
