(Throw away account because I'm paranoid) I have a job that is, in many ways, good. I work from home. Money is decent, good benefits for me and family. Though I generally like the work, I'm bored and not challenged and, for a variety of reasons, there aren't good options to change that (I know this sounds like something I could change, but for purposes of this, just take this on faith.) Among the things that are both challenging and great about my current job is that it really doesn't take up my full-time, BUT I need to be available during working hours at a moment's notice.
But, I feel like this should present me with an opportunity to do some extra work on the side to earn some extra money and help fund the kids' college funds a bit. Skill-wise, I'm a social-sciences research type, with decades of experience in looking at new industries, issues, problems, gaining an understanding then summarizing and proposing ideas and solutions. I have a MA in public policy (not that that means much at this point.) I'm not at all committed to doing the same things in this other work, but that is what I know thus far.
I feel like I should be able to take my 1-4 hours/day (it varies) and put that time into something that helps me earn some extra money and also provides an interesting new challenge. I've read (and read, and read) lots of blogs and write-ups on various "side hustles", but (and maybe this is just my problem), I've struggled to find one that doesn't seem like it is mostly a scam to get me to buy their $200 how-to guide. I'd really appreciate any guidance, advice, pushy questions, or even just telling me to quit whining. :) I'm frustrated with myself for not being able to figure this out and would value any direction. Edit: I guess one more thing I've considered is, do I first need to spend a number of hours learning a new skill that could then be applied in this time, so appreciate any advice in that direction as well. Thanks in advance.
