I want to go from average factory worker to a job in either IT or Marketing. Whats the best thing i can do?
Call this a life crisis. I'll be turning 30 in late October, and I've come to the realization that I may have wasted my 20's working and trying to work my way up in an industry that there just isn't room for advancement in.
First off I graduated high school, but I don't have a degree. I'm a self-taught web designer and graphic designer but I have only had 2 or 3 jobs where I used those skills. I am also certified in Google Adwords and Analytics.
Most of my 20's I spent working at car dealerships working in the detail department. I was once a marketing manager at a dealership for about a year, but it was sold to a bigger company who had a BDC Departnent and no longer needed me, so I got moved back to detail. At other dealerships I spent a lot of my personal time helping salesman with marketing materials, creating social graphics, Facebook ads for the owner who managed the accounts. However they never lead to any promotion or official job despite pushing for it.
So now I am about to turn 30, Im married with 2 kids. I work at a local factory making fuel injectors for diesel engines. I hate it. The work is actually pretty easy, and the company is great. However it's soul crushing. Growing up this was my worst fear. I am doing the same thing everyone in my family has always done.
I want to make a change. I want to reach my full potential and make a significant difference in a company I work for. I want to enjoy what I do everyday, at least in general. I know there is downsides to every job.
My issue is that I don't know what to do. I know going back to school could be an option, but I can't afford to miss work as I'm barely getting by as it is. I've bought a course on udemy to learn Amazon AWS, it'll also help me get certified. I dont know if this is what I should do, but it's a start I guess.
I could really use some advice. I want a career that I can be proud of and one that alws me to provide my family with a great life.
I've reached out to my dad and step dad, mom, etc and they just tell me to learn to be ok with my current job. I think that's shitty advice to be honest.
