Hello, this is to just give an update on my mother's progress on going back to school and upon what will be the advice to give her. She is in NY with her associate degree notarized from her motherland and I am in graduate school in Boston so I can't find the time to consistently look into what she is interested in. Previously, we were deciding between whether the Teacher or Medical field would be the best one for her to pursue based on time needed, long term, job market, etc based in NY.
So after decision making, we have decided on the Medical/Health Science area which still needs more work on deciding which exact are in that field to pursue. We have decided upon (a list of the pro/cons is listed)
Her Goals is to find something flexible/part time in the start while she changes her job to find another flexible and less time consuming job with the intent to switch to a full time student and commit all of her time to her studies.
A job that has a bit of a more specific job market that will give her studies a better end goal and longer job viability while she works.
While she does want to give her all to her studies, she does not want to take a very long extended time to do and finish her studies. We are not the most well off family so the idea of paying tens of the thousands dollars multiple times is not the most appeasing. Ideally, she would want to be working with her certificate/degree within 3-4 years.
Going back to get her Bachelor in Health Science
Since we are based in NY. Any CUNY is relatively easy to start with part time classes however with only her notarized associates, she will start from roughly square one/two maybe, this will lead to taking a quite bit of time to get the degree and then going back to get a specific degree/certificate for her actual job as the bachelor will solidify her foundation.
The plus side is the ease of some of these classes along with the financial aid situation available in NYC.
Attending a Medical Assistant program
There are a number of these programs throughout NYC. Now, with just her associates, my mother would be able to start a higher up certificate like a sonographer or a PCT unless she has her bachelor and some experience in the medical field as well. So this would be for the general training as a medical assistant and following that would be interning and that opens up a couple of options that can be later pursued.
The plus side is the ease of scheduling these classes as well the possible pathways available afterwards. However, the one downside is that the higher certificates can't be achieved until the medical assistant is achieved and then 1-2 years of experience is achieved which increases the timeline that my mother would want to be in school for. However I am not sure yet.

Attending a Physical Therapist Program
This is a program that begins with a bit of preliminary classes that are flexible and then requires a full time commitment once the actual physical therapist classes start. This falls within a specific however competitive field that will have good long term growth. The general timeline of this falls withing 2-2 1/2 years depending on the acceptance to the program and passing the test.

Based off the information above, we are leaning upon the Physical Therapist program which hits a couple of marks clean. It is a form of medical assistant that is a bit more specific which in turn lead to a higher salary, a relative short timeline averaging 2-3 years before permanent job placement) However I am unsure if just doing the Medical Assistant program to enter the field and then deciding upon what area grabs her attention is better.
The current timeline is to meet with the Physical Therapist Advisors in the next week or two and see the potential coursework/timeline that they propose to us. Along with meeting with the Medical Assistant office again as well.
However please comment any help, advice, questions or criticisms. The pro/cons are just based on my family's outlook for the next 3-5 years so there can be a lot of wrong assumptions. I personally don't know many people associated with the medical field to haggle for help so reddit is the place I use.
