Soon to be 26 year old geologist with no debt, considering grad school and career change. Need some honest advice!
I am a soon to be 26 year old disillusioned geologist. I was laid off from my environmental consulting gig before the coronavirus pandemic back in January. My work focused on abandoned mine remediation projects, drilling wells and leaking underground storage tank sites. I worked in consulting for around 16 months. Most of my job had me feeling like a glorified construction worker. Super long days working in remote places grew tiresome and lonely. I realized pretty quickly that I didn't want to climb the consulting ladder to become a PM. I have the ability to go back to school in state with highly reduced tuition. I want to learn a skill that will allow me more job opportunities. I am excited to be a student again now that I'm more mature and have real world experience. I felt compelled to stick with geology because that's what my undergraduate degree was, recently I have considered other career options. I saved most of my income from my consulting job (around 15k) and have no debt. I am living with my parents rent free. I want to change careers into something more stable (no crazy traveling in remote places, for long periods of time). Perhaps something related to programming and GIS, since I have some background from undergrad classes. I'd love to hear from anyone who has made a career change out of environmental consulting into something they found more worth while. Thanks for reading through all this! Any advice you may be able to give me would be greatly appreciated! Have a great day.
