I really want to make a career switch into tech; however, I have a background in Sociology. I currently have a pretty decent paying gig with great benefits at a major research hospital in Houston. Problem is, I am completely unfulfilled.
Over the last few months, I started learning python, and I really enjoy coding. I am leaning more towards going back to earn a BS in computer science (boot camps are out of the question for me). However, I owe a crap ton in undergraduate student debt and am ineligible to take out additional federal student loans at the undergraduate level (stay in state kiddos!).
There are a few data science programs in Houston at the MS level, and the only prereq I would need is linear algebra because I took calc 1 and calc 2 at the undergraduate level. The field of Data Science is interesting to me and atm has lower barriers for entry (money and time wise). At the master’s level, I’d be able to borrow federal loans, and my job would reimburse me for most of the cost of the program.
Should I figure out a way to pursue computer science since I am more interested in software developer roles, or would it make the most sense to go for an MSDS program?
Note: pardon any grammatical errors
