I want to pursue a career in graphic design but I have no clue where to get started. What are my options? [UK]

Hi! I'm 17, and I have always wanted to pursue a career in graphic design. I'm in college now, and I finish in June next year. I have been working on a portfolio for over a month, and have other things I have been creating on the side. But in college, I haven't been studying a graphic design course, and I am not going to uni either. I'm looking for an apprenticeship in it, but I can't find anything in my area. What are my options? Should I just get into contact with companies in my area, or take up another apprenticeship or job when I finish college in a different field? I thought about freelancing as a start, but it isn't stable.
