Trump would be 'in handcuffs' if not president, says Democrat Warren

Trump would be 'in handcuffs' if not president, says Democrat WarrenDemocratic White House hopeful Elizabeth Warren said Thursday that if Donald Trump were not protected by his presidential status, he would be "in handcuffs and indicted" for obstructing the investigation into Russia's 2016 election interference. The progressive US senator from Massachusetts, one of the leading Democrats for the party's 2020 nomination, was the first presidential candidate to speak out in favor of launching impeachment proceedings against Trump. Warren had called for an impeachment inquiry the day after the April 18 publication of special counsel Robert Mueller's 448-page report on Moscow's election interference.

New Mexico town gets death threats after halting crowd-funded border wall

New Mexico town gets death threats after halting crowd-funded border wallA New Mexico mayor on Thursday said he and his staff received multiple death threats after they briefly halted construction of a crowd-funded, private border wall by a group that then urged supporters to tell the city to "stop playing games," and alleged it was tied to drug cartels. The Florida-based group has raised $23 million via crowd-funding site GoFundMe.com to build private border walls to halt smuggling and a surge in undocumented migrants, after funding for President Donald Trump's promised wall was blocked. Perea described the tactics of We Build the Wall as a "cheap blow," and the American Civil Liberties Union accused it of pursuing a "white Nationalist" agenda.

Disney says it won't make any more films in Georgia if draconian abortion laws come into force in the US state

Disney says it won't make any more films in Georgia if draconian abortion laws come into force in the US stateDisney's chief executive has warned Georgia that the company's film and TV productions are likely to abandon the state if its controversial abortion bill becomes law. Bob Iger said it would be "very difficult" for the entertainment giant to continue working in the state if the so-called "heartbeat bill", which outlaws terminations from as early as six weeks, comes into force. The Walt Disney Company has shot some of its biggest films in the US state, including Black Panther and Avengers: Endgame. Speaking to Reuters, Iger said: "If it becomes law, it'll be very difficult. "I think many people who work for us will not want to work there, and we will have to heed their wishes in that regard. "Right now we are watching it very carefully." Sen John Milkovich speaks outside the State Capitol in Louisiana where the House passed Milkovich's 'fetal heartbeat' bill Georgia has been dubbed the "Hollywood of the South" after it lured production companies with favourable tax laws. The state offers a tax credit that has lured many film and TV productions. The industry is responsible for more than 92,000 jobs in Georgia, according to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), and some 455 productions were shot in Georgia in 2018, according to the state. However, its proposed abortion laws have caused fury across the industry, with leading stars lining up to condemn the bill. Netflix has also warned it could pull out of the state. Georgia's bill bans abortions in cases where a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks. It is due to come into effect on January 1 2020, although campaigners have already said they will fight it in the courts. It came as last night Louisiana on Wednesday also passed a bill banning abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, becoming the seventh state to do so. The bans are expected to be blocked in lower courts, but supporters plan to appeal such decisions until they reach the Supreme Court.

US national spelling bee crowns eight co-champions after running out of challenging words

US national spelling bee crowns eight co-champions after running out of challenging wordsA superhuman group of adolescents broke the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday, with eight contestants crowned co-champions after the competition said it was running out of challenging words. It was a stunning result, coming just after midnight, for the 92nd annual event, which has had six two-way ties but had never experienced such a logjam at the top. After the 17th round, Jacques Bailly, the event’s pronouncer, announced that any of the eight remaining contestants who made it through three more words would share in the prize.“We do have plenty of words remaining in our list, but we’ll soon run out of words that will challenge you,” Mr Bailly told the contestants at Gaylord National Resort & Convention Centre in National Harbour, Maryland. He added: “We’re throwing the dictionary at you. And so far, you are showing this dictionary who is boss.”None of the contestants faltered. They each got their own moment of triumph as they correctly spelled their words in the 20th round, then patiently sat back in their seats as the following contestants had their moments. They supported each other with high-fives and hugs, and each placed a hand on a single trophy. The champions were, along with the final words they spelled:Rishik Gandhasri, 13, of San Jose, California: auslaut.Erin Howard, 14, of Huntsville, Alabama: erysipelas.Saketh Sundar, 13, of Clarksville, Maryland: bougainvillea.Shruthika Padhy, 13, of Cherry Hill, New Jersey: aiguillette.Sohum Sukhatankar, 13, of Dallas: pendeloque.Abhijay Kodali, 12, of Flower Mound, Texas: palama.Christopher Serrao, 13, of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey: cernuous.Rohan Raja, 13, of Irving, Texas: odylic. The competition normally offers a $50,000 (£39,610) prize to the champion. Instead of splitting it eight ways, all eight contestants will receive $50,000 and their own trophies. There have been marathon spelling bees before — the 2017 event went 36 rounds, with two spellers battling it out after the 17th round — but the competition has never hosted such a large group of spellers who could not be defeated. The field is typically winnowed down to fewer than four by the 16th round. This year, the ninth-place finisher, 13-year-old Simone Kaplan of Davie, Florida, was thwarted in the 15th round. From that point on, the contestants correctly spelled 47 straight words.Already nervous, they started showing signs of fatigue as the competition stretched on past its expected window. At the beginning of the 17th round, Rishik had a question for Mr Bailly.“Out of curiosity, would you happen to know what time it is?” he asked. It was 11:18 pm.It was one of several moments of levity from a group of students who appeared largely unfazed by the pressure, with their parents in the audience often looking more unsettled.Rohan prompted laughter in the 17th round as he recoiled at his errant pronunciation of “Gaeltacht.”“Oh God,” he said, “I sound like I vomited.”The New York Times

Auto industry dented by latest Trump tariffs

Auto industry dented by latest Trump tariffsPresident Donald Trump's plan to impose tariffs on Mexico will affect myriad industries, but few are as exposed as automakers. Shares of several major automakers and auto suppliers dived five percent or more following Trump's announcement Thursday night that the United States would impose a five percent tariff on all Mexican imports on June 10, explicitly linking the trade action to a demand that Mexico crack down on illegal immigration. The White House intends to gradually raise the tariff level until it hits 25 percent on October 1, a levy that "could cripple the industry and cause major uncertainty," said a note from Deutsche Bank.

Jussie Smollett: Possible deal was in the works a month before charges dropped, documents show

Jussie Smollett: Possible deal was in the works a month before charges dropped, documents showNew documents on the Jussie Smollett case show that prosecutors told Chicago police detectives that a possible deal with the actor was in the works a month before charges against him were dropped.Smollett was charged in March with 16 counts alleging he lied to police when reporting he'd been the victim of a racist, anti-gay attack in January. Police contend the black and openly gay actor allegedly staged the attack because he was unhappy with his salary and wanted publicity.Prosecutors dropped charges on 26 March without Smollett admitting guilt. Then Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and police Superintendent Eddie Johnson expressed outrage over the prosecutors' decision. Smollett has maintained his innocence. The approximately 460 pages of new documents show that detectives investigating Smollett's allegations were told by Cook County prosecutors a deal with the Empire actor could include a $10,000 fine and community service. The detectives did not pass the information to superiors. "They didn't pass it on because they didn't know it (the case) was going to be handled the way it was," said Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. In the documents released on Thursday, detectives note the Chicago Police Department was informed by the Cook County State's Attorney's office on 28 February that they could no longer investigate the crime. Smollett was indicted on 7 March. The lead investigators in the case met with Assistant State's Attorney Risa Lanier, who informed detectives "that she felt the case would be settled with Smollett paying the city of Chicago $10,000 in restitution and doing community service". The detectives closed the case at that point because an arrest was made and the alleged offender was being prosecuted, according to Guglielmi. It was the attorneys for Smollett who announced charges alleging he lied to police about attack had been dropped. At the time, Johnson said he learned of the deal prosecutors made with Smollett when the deal was announced by lawyers, adding he didn't think justice was being served. However, he didn't directly criticise prosecutors."My job as a police officer is to investigate an incident, gather evidence, gather the facts and present them to the state's attorney," Johnson said. "That's what we did. I stand behind the detectives' investigation." The Illinois Prosecutors Bar Association said the dismissal of the charges was "an affront to prosecutors across the state" as well as police, victims of hate crimes and the county as a whole. The city of Chicago is seeking $130,000 from Smollett to cover the costs of the investigation into his reported beating. The city claims about two dozen detectives and officers investigated the entertainer's report that he was attacked, resulting in a "substantial number of overtime hours."Additional reporting by agencies

Barr: Counter-intelligence Probe of Trump Campaign Crossed ‘Serious Red Line’

Barr: Counter-intelligence Probe of Trump Campaign Crossed ‘Serious Red Line’Attorney General William Barr said Friday that the FBI's counterintelligence investigation of the Trump campaign "crossed" a "serious red line" and should be "carefully looked at.""The use of foreign intelligence capabilities and counterintelligence capabilities against an American political campaign to me is unprecedented and it's a serious red line that's been crossed," Barr said in an interview with CBS.The attorney general is currently investigating the origins of the probe to determine whether the U.S. intelligence community's surveillance of the Trump campaign was warranted. He has expressed skepticism about the explanations for some of the investigative actions taken.During testimony to the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee last month, Barr stated that "spying did occur" on the Trump campaign, angering Democratic lawmakers."I guess it's become a dirty word somehow," Barr told CBS. "I think there is nothing wrong with spying. The question is always whether it is authorized by law.""There were counterintelligence activities undertaken against the Trump campaign, And I'm not saying there was not a basis for it, that it was legitimate, but I want to see what that basis was and make sure it was legitimate," he added. The New York Times reported that the FBI sent an undercover agent posing as a research assistant to ask former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos whether the campaign was working with Russia. Papadopoulos was told by a Maltese professor in early 2016 that Russia had damaging information on Trump's opponent, Hillary Clinton, but said he told the undercover agent he had “nothing to do with Russia.”"Republics have fallen because of Praetorian Guard mentality where government officials get very arrogant, they identify the national interest with their own political preferences, and they feel that anyone who has a different opinion, you know, is somehow an enemy of the state," Barr remarked. "That can easily translate into essentially supervening the will of the majority and getting your own way as a government official."FBI director Chris Wray said earlier this month that he had seen no evidence that the FBI illegally spied on the Trump campaign.

Amit Shah: Modi's enforcer emerges from behind India's throne

Amit Shah: Modi's enforcer emerges from behind India's throneAs the battle-hardened drill sergeant for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah has long been considered India's second most-powerful person, and his appointment Friday as home minister elevates his position to leader-in-waiting. While Modi is the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party's people person, firing up rallies and mastering Twitter, Shah has for years made sure that Modi's orders are carried out to the letter while turning the world's biggest political party into the undisputed force across the nation of 1.3 billion people. Shah's piercing stare and strongarm tactics have made him a feared and respected figure in the Hindu nationalist party -- opposition parties and critics call him "ruthless" -- a status only increased by his role masterminding the BJP's second straight landslide election victory this month as the party president.

How to professionally take unpaid time off regardless of request answer?

I just started a job that I'm already disliking, it's a new company with no processes, no clear guidance, and very understaffed. On top of this they are already a very long commute, but the pay is really good for my area. So far, I'm pretty resigned to work there until I can get employment that is a better fit, money is not really an issue for me, as I recently sold my house and have a partner that also works and contributes their fair share.

My debate is this, I recently was told there could be a chance for me and my partner to take 2 week vacation to a dream foreign location that I've wanted to go to since I was a child. This is one of the few times that we know we will have this availability to go (partner is in the military) in October, which makes me hesitate finding other employment elsewhere in the meantime. When we have a more solid schedule, plane tickets purchased, etc. I would like to as professionally as possible, inform them that this is going to take place (ideally I'd give them about a months notice).

I'm not a very confrontational person, and I have a feeling they are going to come back saying they can't approve it, need me to work, or just outright no. How do I maintain some sense of professionalism while maintaining that this is happening, regardless of the outcome of my employment?

I'm aware this already isn't the most professional path I am taking, but this is quiet literally a childhood dream of mine, and I don't really see myself sacrificing it for a job I am not super invested in.

I Could not Secure an Internship my Last Summer of University. What Happens Now?

I am currently a third year going into my fourth and final year.

I have a double major in religion and political science with a concentration in global politics and a minor in international studies.

I have gotten rejected from every internship I applied to. I have gotten three interviews, but I have been notified I have been dropped all three times. Most of the other places never even bothered replying back.

I am currently living in Orange County my parents moved to very recently. I have no contacts and connections here since it is not where I grew up and I have only ever spent a winter break here.

What chances do I have of securing an internship or volunteer position at this point? If I don't, what happens to my career aspects?

Thanks

Need help considering future job

Sorry for the vague title, but I couldn't think of what to say.

As of now, I'm about to end my Freshman year of high school, (I know, I'm a little too young to be worrying about the kind of things I'm gonna talk about.) And as of now, I'm heavily considering becoming an anesthesiologist, as it's one of the best paying jobs and I'd someday like to move to, prepare for the cliche, Hawaii. Yeah I know, kinda unrealistic, but it's seriously something I want to do. I'm already saving up for a huge trip there after high school, and I heavily considering moving there and working as an anesthesiologist.

Here are my questions.

  1. So far, my grades are at a straight A and B level, with the rare C. I've only ever gotten 2. Am I able to enter a good college and medical school? I've heard the competition is high.

  2. What other job opportunities are present hawaii, other than the massive tourism industry?

Thanks!

Any past architects or designers out there?

Where did your career take you after architecture? Why did you leave? After 15+ years, i can’t keep allowing the long hours affect my family life. Life is just too short. Not sure if this is the case at all firms, but it seems like we’re being asked to do more for less and much faster. Creativity is not a commodity. But I don’t know what to do next or how to transition into another role. I can’t imagine staring at spreadsheets all day (no offense to anyone who loves spreadsheets:).

Should I take a job that isn't well paying, knowing I will leave if something better comes along?

31/F, USA, BA in communications. I applied to an office job not knowing that it was part time and it paid 13.50/hour. I am trying to move out % be independent again after moving back home in March. I haven't been able to find a job yet, but I have an interview tomorrow finally! the only issue is that it doesn't pay enough. Would it be a jerk move to take the job and then abandon it as soon as I get a well paying position? Deciding on 2 jobs

21 years old. I've been working at a sports bar/restaurant for around 2.5 years and was about to be a bartender before getting a job with an electrical contractor.

At the bar I'm getting $12/hour plus tips, and my boss there has offered me full time again as a bartender after working with the contractor for a few months. I'd probably make $50 in tips on average a morning but it can be really slow too. Can be stressful, somewhat hard work. Stable 40 hrs/week though.

With the contractor I'm cleaning high voltage industrial breakers, starters, cubicles, etc. making $18/hour on 12 hour days with room for raises if I do well. 84 hour work weeks come often. The downsides are I'm gone for a week or three at a time and it's not stable. The past two months I've only worked about 2 weeks. The boss is also unpredictable and can be quite an asshole. An important thing for me to consider is this job isn't an apprenticeship, I believe I won't be able to do anything else with the experience after.

With these included I've had 4 jobs total and just don't have the experience and confidence in making a good decision. Any advice? Reading rules now, will edit if required.

What should I do with my Degree in Econ?

I'm about to graduate from college with a B.S in Economic analysis. I originally went for this degree because I wanted to continue on to grad school and eventually become an economist so that I can work for the federal reserve. Eventually though, my grades started to slip and I no longer want to work for the fed. Now I've realized that what would really make me happy is to own an animation studio that adapts manga/comics and produces anime. But I obviously still want to use my degree to find work in the mean time. So I was thinking that I could use economics to analyze what is going on in the Japanese Animation industry, since that is something I'm very interested in. My idea is to get a job that will allow me to utilize my economics degree while also teaching me the skills to analyze an industry, so that I can also apply those skills to learn more about the animation industry that I plan on joining in the future. The anime industy has a lot of problems like piracy, low wages, ect. So I was wondering if there is a job description where I could do something like that? I was thinking the Market Research Analysis would fit the description but that doesn't seem to be quite right, Data analyst also seems like the next closest thing.

My new role is pushing all of my buttons, and isolating me. It IS a good move though. How do I work through this?

Background: Worked in a high pressure, high $$$ value sales environment. Peaked in the sales environment and sought professional growth and a new challenge.

I've been moved to a different department in my workplace as part of my career development, and to help plug a hole for our organisation that's been causing pretty huge problems.

I'm happy for the move and I needed the move. This is a good career move for me.

But... I'm really struggling with the interpersonal challenges of the new role.

I've gone from being part of a large sales team, to being the person who decides whether what the sales team does is ethical and compliant. I've become a (necessary) roadblock to my colleagues sales and it's hurting.

My preferred method of working with colleagues is through consensus - I don't like to make decisions on my own, and hate saying no to people. This new role doesn't allow for consensus because it creates ethical conflicts and essentially undermines the purpose of the role in the first place.

I'd really appreciate any advice on:

a) How to be more decisive when I'm a typical indecisive people pleaser. This role is REALLY pushing me out of my comfort zone on that front.

b) How to deal with being isolated by the role. I cannot lean on any of my established work relationships for support as I'm now opposing their decision making.

Thank you!

Im debating if going back to college will be worth it?

Tl;dr: bee. Oit of college for 4-5 years, wondering if going back to college for an associates degree is really worth it for me as the bread winner of my family.

After highschool I went to a community college for about 3 or 4 semesters trying to get a degree in the theater arts. I later dropped out because i knew my major would most likely take me anywhere amd didnt like the community college experience. Ive been a full time worker for the past 4 or 5 years now, working in Pest Control and as a Fire Extinguisher technician.

Recently my current job changed my pay structure so now I make about 1.5k less a month. Ive had to borrow money from all over to keep a roof over my wife and sons head. Now, I dont have the best relationship with my dad, but this last time ai borrowed money from him, he told me I should go back to school and get a degree. He said he will help me pay for college if I need it.

So I guess my main question is, if I go back to community college, and get gov't financial aid and get an assosiates degree, what kind of jobs am I looking at being able to get?

I live in California and am a bit of an outdoors guys, I was wondering if an associates could land me a job with the US department of forestry or maybe a State Parks Ranger or something?

My main worry is my family though... I am the bread winner so Ill be going back to school and would have to find a new job that would work around my schedual while still paying me around $3k to pay all my bills... Almost soinds impossible now that I type it all out hahaha. Anyway, any advice would be fantastic. Thanks!!

Is college worth it?

I'm a computer science major and I don't have any passion for it. Everyone keeps saying that my job requires technical skill so I'm afraid I wont be able to get a job even with a degree. I believe that I'm capable, but the competitiveness is real and I just don't have that. I'm not an overachiever I just want a life where I can sustain myself enough to be happy. Being in school has made me doubt myself. I failed my first coding class this past quarter and I'm beginning to doubt whether I have the ability to work in my field. The class was grueling, hard work and I mentally wasn't prepared for it. I chose to fail and ignore the class to preserve my mental health. I became really depressed because I couldn't do the work required for the course and that became a cycle of not doing the work and becoming more and more depressed because of my failure. I know that this isn't the first failure I will have in life but it's made me question whether or not I have it in me technically, and mentally to work as a software developer. Should I just drop out and work minimum wage or try to find a decent career with my current knowledge? Should I keep going and get my degree while knowing I don't have the passion that others in my major do? My failure has set me back so I'll have to stay in school for longer too for my degree. I don't know if I'll be able to succeed and I dont want to waste another two years of my life doing something I don't want to do.

Manager Threatened To Fire Me

So I just wanted some advice as I work for a small Tesco Express and my issue is with my manager. I was recently ill, went to the doctors and they said I had a bad viral throat/ear infection. I had 3 days off work. Upon returning to work I to have a meeting as my year to date sickness went over 3% requiring a talk about my sickness percentage. My manager used this interview to try and make me say I made myself ill?! And I got a written disciplinary put on my file despite definitely 100% not being able to work. All he cares about is being the best... and our yearly sickness percentage wasn't the best within our group so hes going down hard on everyone. After this, not written down at all but heard by a colleague, my manager brought up that I had said to someone I was pissed off with him.

My manager said to me 'I don't want poisonous employees working here and what you said is poisonous. If I ever hear you speak to someone or do anything like that again I will manager you out of this building. I will find a way to fire you within days'.

Now I'm no expert but suggesting you are pissed off with your boss, although unprofessional, is not worthy of being fired for. I can't speak to anyone about this where I work because my boss will hear about it and find a way to fire me. Every time I go to work I now feel like I have to be ultra careful and I shouldn't? Also I can tell my boss has asked two staff members to watch what I do as they have been warning me about tiny little mistakes.

What would you do? My manager is ruthless and will do absolutely anything to be 'the best'. I work exceptionally hard, work overtime when the shop requires extra staff due to staffing issues and I've already asked to be transferred.

The odd one out

Hey everyone let me give you some backstory. I’m 25 and currently work in customer service. Ive done factory work for years and some other jobs. I dropped out of high school but ended up getting my GED. I was always interested in creating something of my own and saw YouTube as a a good path. I made a fashion video as my first ever and loved it. Unfortunately I didn’t have the fund to continue to buy the newest trends so I went into gaming.

This month I’ve been at war with the idea of going to school to pursue something (My girlfriend is about to be a nurse and continues to push me this direction) or going all out with Youtube. I’m not sure what I’d go to school for, I’m very creative and good with people. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bali Is A Solo Traveler’s Dream

bali

Although some people have certain reservations towards traveling solo, solivagantry (solitary wandering) is actually a great opportunity to meet other cultures and make new friends. One of the top destinations to explore the world that is much different than the ’western’ one is Bali, even though it’s geographically pretty close if you’re from the Oz land. You also shouldn’t be worried or reluctant to travel alone if you’re a girl, as Bali is generally considered to be a safe place (even though some men tend to be a bit too friendly at times).

We present to you some of the reasons why you would want to immediately book a flight to Bali and see for yourself all the glorious things that others are oh so eagerly telling you about. You like the picturesque, otherworldy nature? Check. You like unwinding on an azure beach while chugging cocktails all day long? Check. You like pampering your body and hitting the day spas? Check. You like to party all night long? Check. You like catching the waves? Bali is a mecca for surfing, too.

Traveling solo to Bali can also work wonders for you if you’re on a journey of self-discovery and exploration. You can visit Balinese temples, enjoy Balinese traditional dances, visit galleries, workshops, cooking classes, or learn/exercise yoga with some of the true experts in the field. Truthfully speaking, Bali has so much to offer to you, that you won’t feel dull for one single moment, no matter how long you decide to stay. These are some of the tips on what to see and visit, dos and don’ts – and the list is in no way conclusive since Bali truly has so much to offer to a solo traveler.

Where To Go And Reasons To Go

No matter where you actually end up staying, Bali is definitely worth exploring and going around to see other places as well. You won’t get bored if you stay only at one place and don’t wander around too much, but if the opportunity presents itself, make sure to take advantage.

Ubud is the small village in Bali which is really getting popular in recent years. There are so many beautiful, breath-taking temples there, that you’ll instantly feel invigorated and re-energized if soul-searching is what you came for. You’ll quickly find out why Ubud means ’medicine’ in Balinese, which is the island’s native language.

Other than that, there are also rice terraces and the monkey forest that you don’t want to miss. The traditional Balinese food is served all around the island and make sure to try dishes like Nasi Kuning (which consists of yellow rice served topped with a fried egg) and Satay (pork or chicken meat grilled in peanut sauce).

You’ll also find many spas and yoga studios all around the island. As far as money goes, Bali, in general, can be both really cheap and expensive, depending on the way you want it. For instance, you can get an entire day of pampering your body in spas for less than 40 bucks, but you can also opt for dining in fancy restaurants all the time and buying overpriced things, and end up spending a fortune.

Berawa is also a popular tourist area and a part of Canggu (it’s actually located right between Seminyak and Canggu) with its own peculiarities. This part is a paradise for people who are gastronomes and bon vivants in general (don’t even think about keeping up with your regular diet plan in this place!).

Other notable places and areas that you want to consider staying at are Kuta, especially if you like shopping and don’t mind all the tourists; Seminyak – which is also loaded with action, so expect it to be crowded; Umalas – the place that you’d want to choose especially if you’re more into chilling out and relaxing since it’s still overlooked at times (compared to the other places we’ve mentioned thus far); Uluwatu – if you like to surf and enjoy a relaxing, almost hippie ambiance, search no further; Jimbaran Bay – another great option if you want to dip your toes in sand and loosen up.

What To See?

If you’re still not fully convinced that Bali is an amazing location for you, we recommend visiting some of the coolest festivals that you’ll get a chance to experience in your lifetime.

In case you’re a fan of music, there are a lot of music festivals which are located down the southern coast of the island. Seminyak hosts a Sunny Side Up Tropical Fest at Potato Head.

A large food festival (both vegan and regular) is happening in Ubud, and you don’t want to miss it if you’re around when it’s in full swing.

Other than these, Bali also hosts the largest yoga festival in Asia – the aforementioned BaliSpirit Festival. The important thing to note here is that this one’s not specially reserved only to those yoga aficionados who come to Bali only for this occasion. Girls who travel solo will get a chance to enjoy the artworks, music, dancing, soul and body healing in beautiful an utterly memorable life-changing experience.

Where To Stay?

Finding accommodation is fairly easy in Bali. You can opt for hotels, hostels, guesthouses, homestays, villas, wellness resorts, etc. When you’re traveling alone, we would recommend you to find a guesthouse or a villa where you can meet other people more easily, and this is especially advisable if it’s your first time in Bali and you don’t know much about the place.

These guesthouses and villas usually include breakfast and those amazing swimming pools that you can use for free. Villas are also a good option to pick since you’ll have more privacy than you would if you were staying at the hostel. They are also quieter and you’ll quickly feel as if you’re at home, but with one ’slight’ difference – all that jaw-dropping and staggering things are within your hand’s reach.

What (Not) To Eat (and Drink)?

We’ve already covered some of the basic things when we’ve mentioned Nasi Kuning and Satay dishes, and Ubud food festival as well. But this really doesn’t even come close to the things that you’ll get a chance to taste while you’re there.

Balinese cuisine is well-known for the dishes that are fresh, spicy, but also well-balanced. Solo travelers can get a chance to actually learn to cook Balinese style dishes, as they’re sometimes welcomed by local Ibus (Balinese for ’mothers’) to join them in the kitchen. So, not only will you be able to enjoy the meals that are freshly prepared by the locals, but you’ll also have an opportunity to learn some of the cooking crafts of Balinese traditional cuisine. It doesn’t get much cooler than this, especially if you consider yourself to be a foodie.

But there are also some things that you most definitely want to avoid. Never, ever, drink the tap water (not even to rinse your mouth after brushing your teeth!), and generally, avoid suspicious looking street food like Bakso. One of the things that you want to avoid when going to Bali is getting the infamous Bali belly. Although there are local pharmacies and stores that sell medicines that can patch you up so you can continue enjoying the island, it’s never fun to lose any sleep or time vomiting or having diarrhea. Drink plenty of water, but just make sure that it’s bottled.

Also, don’t drink spirits and alcoholic beverages that you don’t know where exactly are they coming from. There were some reported cases of pure methanol being sold instead of ethanol. You’ll quickly learn that there’s a big difference between those two, in case you don’t know that already.

General Dos and Don’ts

We and you both already know that you’ll have a great time if you visit Bali solo. You’ll travel around and meet other people and culture that’s probably very different than yours. You will be enjoying the beautiful beaches, spas, wellness resorts, manicures, pedicures, massages. You’ll eat the food that tastes and looks amazing, and relax by the pool or in your comfy room. You may visit the arts, music, dance, food festivals, learn to cook with the locals, visit the workshops and temples. You’ll get a chance to see the monkey forest, rice terraces, and many, many other different things.

But there are some general rules, and dos and don’ts when it comes to visiting Bali. First of all, be aware that the rainy season starts somewhere around October and ends in March. The best time to go is probably from May till September. Secondly, avoid being out in the sun from 11 am to 3-4 in the afternoon. We’ve already told you to stay away from suspicious-looking food and drinks, and here’s a bonus tip: stay away from drugs at all costs – you can get in more trouble than you can handle.

Be aware of traffic accidents. Bali has notoriously dangerous traffic. If you rent a scooter to go around the island, wear a helmet. In case you’re not on a budget, you can also consider hiring a driver for the day (or even for the entire stay). They aren’t as expensive as you might think (they usually charge around $50 a day), so this is a really nice option which offers you to enjoy the beautiful scenery even more. You can gaze through the car window and not worry about the traffic at all.

In Summary: Who Is This Trip For?

This solo travel to Bali is especially appropriate for all of you girls out there who are looking to spice things up a little bit and experience something quite different. So, whether you’re a world traveler and have seen many places, or you actually don’t get a chance to explore the globe that much, Bali offers a perfect opportunity for you to spend either an active vacation full of unforgettable experiences or to completely relax and unwind in peace and quiet.

But Bali isn’t just for vacationing either. Many people today are living that extremely popular ’digital nomad’ lifestyle, and choose Bali as one of their top destinations for workations. If you’re among the lucky ones who aren’t attached to their offices and you’re working remotely, you definitely want to take advantage of that and try out what thousands are doing every day.

There are a number of good reasons why people all around the globe are opting for workations in Bali: it’s relatively cheap with good WIFI connection, and they also get to experience all the amazing things that we’ve listed for you in this article. So, don’t hesitate any longer – Bali is waiting for you with both arms spread wide open. Yours is just to come over and see everything for yourself.

Dealing with Workplace Harassment – A Simpler Approach

manage your boss

It is no revelation that workplace culture needs a facelift given the infuriating world of sexual harassment and workplace improprieties by supervisors, CEOs, and power-trippers.  As many states are implementing new laws regarding workplace harassment as part of the #MeToo movement, companies have the opportunity to pivot from the traditional measures of addressing these issues by really changing and emphasizing a corporate culture that goes beyond the notions of handbooks and training seminars.  If done efficiently and effectively, the outcomes will increase the bottom line and ensure that the company stays out of the headlines.

To truly cleanse a workplace culture and create one of inclusion, diversity and common good, employers must implore new approaches to resolve and prevent sexual harassment incidences.  This includes removing themselves from the investigation process and the fear associated with reporting harassment.   Only then can the necessary shift exemplified from the C-suite propel a company forward and better equip themselves to handle such issues.

Current System is Inoperative

The historical treatment of sexual harassment has routinely been dealt with by training seminars and handbook policies that did not directly address the core issue or take matters seriously.  Remember, sexual harassment is not simply about sex. It is often a tool wielded to assert power and dominance over another person. As such, training videos had little impact in resolving the harassment issues.  If anything, training was provided to allow employers the opportunity to say that they took harassment seriously – when recent evidence points to the opposite.

When it came to handbooks or policies related to harassment, most employers had language providing that if any harassment should occur, the employee needed to report the incident to their supervisor or human resources department.  Is this the right approach?  Absolutely not, given the fact that a majority of the harassment is done by a supervisor or someone in power over a subordinate.  Having a platform or policy set up in this manner makes reporting unreasonable and has caused this “fear” of reporting to percolate under the rugs of corporate America.

narcissistic boss

Outside of training seminars and toothless harassment policies requiring reporting to supervisors, employers used a different tool with anonymous hotlines or 1-800 numbers.  Although originally designed to help with reporting harassment or removing the “fear” of reporting, in reality these hotlines just send the reports back to the human resource department or supervisors.

As reported by the EEOC, training or harassment policies are less probable to have a significant impact on changing employees’ attitudes, and may even have the opposite effect.  With this, the EEOC further reports that approximately 90% of sexual harassment goes unreported, despite a 50% increase in legal suits filed.  Employers need to turn to other measured approaches to clean up their culture and prevent costly claims and scandals.

The Solution

To truly address the cultural issues feeding the harassment environment of corporate America, two things must occur.  First, the fear of reporting must be removed.  Second, the employer must be eradicated from the handling, intake and investigation process. Instead of focusing on compliance or claim prevention, employers should strive to create a culture of inclusiveness and diversity grounded in mutual respect.  The benefits are undeniable and well-rooted.  Employers with positive cultures experience increased productivity, lower turnover and absenteeism, as well as healthier employees due to the decreased stress and physical tolls that harassment causes.  Take all of this together and a company increases the bottom line – all due to a culture shift!

A Simple Approach – Implement Third-Party Reporting & Investigation

A simple solution is to implement an efficient and effective platform that allows for reporting to a third party, and having that outside party handle the complete investigation on behalf of the employer.  By removing the employer from investigations, companies are able to subsequently remove the fear, which clears the path for a culture of respect and inclusion.  Does this mean there will be zero issues?  No.  There will always be those “bad” hires.  But having a culture of respect will make sure that those bad hires do not drive company profits down by running away valuable employees and harming company culture.   Furthermore, this inherently creates a culture of equality and civility.   This solution is at the fingertips of so many employers. Here are some tips to implement it successfully.

Buy-In From Leadership

To remove the fear of reporting, which is the foundation of creating this culture of civility, executive leadership must display support and encouragement for the change.  If this does not occur, change will not happen and those in leadership are more susceptible to being tomorrow’s headline.

Culture Audit

To understand where the culture is today and what is needed for improvement, employers can implement an anonynous corporate culture audit.  This exhibits to employees that executive leaders and management care about the safety and well-being of all employees.

Spotlight on Good Behaviors

Focusing solely on inappropriate behavior may make employees defensive.  To encourage a culture shift, executives should talk about and highligh good behavior that positively impacts actions of the workforce and sets expectations of what is appropriate.  It’s very similar to how we are as parents.  If you only focus on negative behavior, without highlighting positive actions, the children grow up scared of what not to do, as opposed to knowing what to do.  The same is true with workplace harassment.

7 Things Recruiters Won’t Tell You

recruiter

Recruiters might be the ticket to your dream job. They’re well-connected, always trying to fill multiple positions, and they know the “ins” of the industries and top companies you aspire towards. If you’re lucky enough, they may even have a position that you are a fit for. There is no downside to better understanding the nature of their work.

Here are 7 things recruiters will never tell you, but that you should know:

You could probably negotiate

In a lot of cases, a recruiter could have gone higher, had the candidate only negotiated.

Many candidates will not be bold enough to do this, but it is generally welcomed and a healthy part of an effective hiring process. Typically, a recruiter would get a salary range for each position and it’s unlikely that their initial offer would be at the top of that range. Do your research, get an idea of what you’re worth on the market, and don’t be afraid to name your price.

At the end of the day, the recruiter wants to make the placement. This means they will support you in getting what you want if that’s what it takes to fill the position.

They only skim resumes

You spend hours adding keywords, triple checking for spelling errors, then importing to Photoshop for finishing touches. But that doesn’t mean the recruiter will spend any more than the usual few seconds skimming your carefully-crafted, perfectly formatted CV.

The reality is, there are more resumes to read than they have time for and the majority are usually not a good fit anyway. So unless your qualifications perfectly match the job descriptions, don’t expect a recruiter to spend more than a minute scrutinizing your profile.

 They can only influence—not decide

In most cases, the hiring manager (or their boss) calls the shots. The recruiter is simply there to discuss and offer their professional opinion on the candidates.

If you can, find out who else is important in the hiring process. Build relationships with those people and know who to direct your thank-yous and follow-up questions to. There is always more than one person to impress.

But they still have A LOT of insider info

So don’t be so quick to dismiss them. They know who the hiring managers are, what they’re like, and what they’re looking for. It should still be a top priority to dazzle the recruiter and establish a strong connection with them. After all, they were hired to make that placement.

You may be the Plan B

Already on your third follow-up email? If a recruiter or hiring manager seems to be dragging their feet or delaying in giving you a final decision, chances are there is another candidate in the pipeline.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. Take it as a challenge to convince the recruiter of your fit for the role.  If you are really interested in the position, it wouldn’t hurt to express your enthusiasm. This alone would put you ahead of an equally qualified candidate.

Another possibility could be a delay on the employer’s side. They may put things off, cancel a position, or even ghost their recruiter. It happens. If you have been interviewed and haven’t been given the red light, the best thing to do is to ask the recruiter for an update. They will usually give an honest answer if this is the case.

Remember to maintain an upbeat and positive tone in all follow-ups.

 They don’t work for you

It often comes as a surprise to job-seekers that we work for the companies, not the candidates.

While it is the recruiter’s job to place someone, it doesn’t necessarily have to be you. Needless to say, it is on you to do your due diligence, conduct your own research, and find sources that may be less biased (eg. Glassdoor). Look out for your own interest, as the recruiters are human and are being paid to fill the position.

 Don’t expect feedback

Recruiters are generally not interested in critiquing rejected candidates. Whether that’s due to a lack of interest in telling you that jeans won’t cut it or a fear of negative reaction to honest feedback, it is often more trouble than it’s worth.

On the other hand, if you receive feedback from a recruiter, take it as a compliment. It means they really like you and think you have great potential.

If you do wish to ask for feedback, the key is to ask a specific question such as “What is the main reason I wasn’t considered as a finalist?” Questions like these are easier to respond to and take the guesswork out of open-ended questions.

Recruiters can be the best thing to ever happen to your career. If you are actively job-hunting, know that they are only one part of your career search. They can only help if they have positions that fit you – so don’t rely on them too much!

If you do end up working with one, do your part by researching ahead of time, giving the recruiter as much as possible to work with, and building strong relationships with the key players. In doing so, you will both be better positioned to find success.
