MS in Economics or Data Science
A bit of a background: I'm an Econ undergrad and am looking for a master's program with a focus in econometrics and analysis. Issue is that in my country, no University provides such an analysis focused course (albeit for one, which is pretty competitive). However, a prominent institute focusing in computation and mathematics just started a data science course with excellent industry outreach. Although not immediately, I'd like to pursue a PHd in development economics. The data science course sounds like a good bet but does not have a dissertation/research module that you'd find in its economics counterpart. Is it necessary while applying for research programs? Also, in the odd chance I do take Data science, what should I do in school to ensure I have a good path to research in the future? I'm in a bit of a fix and would appreciate any advice from y'all. Thanks in advance

Working towards my Associate's in Computer Science, also considering getting my bachelor's in IT. Likelihood of getting a job out the gate?
I've grown up in a very poor, very unhappy environment. My goal to get out of it is to get my Associate's in Computer Science, and if need be my Bachelor's in IT. However I'm in a very unstable living right now so if I don't know if I'll be able to pursue my Bachelor's.
What would simply having my Associate's in CS be worth? How likely would I be to get a job out the gate? What would entry level salary look like?

Resume Writing Tips
It’s hard to know how to start a resume when you haven’t had a lot of job experience. Luckily, there are some handy tips and tricks that can help you make your resume look healthy even if you haven’t had a lot of jobs.Check out the steps below, and you’ll have your own resume written up in no time. Or just ask for help resume writing service.
- Primary Contact InfoThis is easy-just your name, your primary contact number (cell phone is fine) and your email address. TIP: Make sure your email address & voicemail are professional! It’s easy to set up a new email account, and an inappropriate email address could cost you the job!
- AddressesUsually you could just put your address with your primary contact info, but college students have a unique situation. Your “Current” address should be wherever you live now-your dorm, apartment, or wherever. Your “Permanent” address is probably going to be your “home” address (parent’s house, grandparents, etc.).
- EducationEven if you are just out of high school, you should still list this. If your GPA isn’t so hot, you can leave it out. High School: Make sure you at least mark down the school name and grad year. College: Write down your current grade level, Major & Minor (if you’ve chosen them), and school. If your Major GPA (the GPA listed for all the courses in your major) is higher than your overall GPA, you might want to list both.
- Paid ExperienceThis is your previous work experience. You can enter anything relevant-even if you’ve maintained a website for your mom and only gotten $20 for it, that’s still paid experience! Try to use “active” verbs, and use specifics if they help you seem more capable. Instead of “Was in charge of answering phones” you “Managed call center with 4 lines.” Especially write down anything unique or valuable that you did to change your workplace for the better.
- Extracurricular ActivitiesUse this space to list your unpaid activities, like volunteer work, club participation, honor society, etc.
- Computer SkillsEmployers are very interested in computer skills, so feel free to write down things that seem very basic or easy to you (like “blogging,” for example. I wrote that on a resume and it was one of the key things my employer wanted to talk about during the interview).Next time I’m going to be offering a downloadable copy of this sample resume, plus I’ll write up some more resume tips.

How do I get a job after being a terrible employee due to treatment resistant depression now that I am better?
I have a degree in Art History and got a teacher certification in K-6. I did half the requirements for a master’s in Education, but opted for an alternative certification program because it was a faster route to a job. Once I started teaching, due to inexperience, the slow, painful death of my father, an undedicated “mentor,” the unending responsibilities of teaching, I experienced extreme anxiety and spiraled into a very dark place due to treatment resistant depression, for which I will be on meds for life (That’s okay with me. I would not be alive without them). I had to take a leave of absence, and eventually quit my job,
I have followed this pattern for 20+ years. I start a job and pressures mount. Eventually, I experience PTSD and depressive symptoms and have to take leave or just quit.
I take pride in my way and strive to do a good job, but eventually, I experience so much anxiety, I get PTSD symptoms like nightmares and insomnia . I begin to feed inadequate and a failure and loser, once again, to the point I feel like I don’t want to live because I’m just not good at it.
All this to say, I don’t have good references. Bosses fell let down and betrayed. Co-workers resent the extra workload for them that my absences cause.
I’m so ashamed, I’m embarrassed to ask anyone for references. I haven’t stayed in contact with any employers and co-workers.
I have many job skills and would like to re-enter the job force in some capacity. I haven’t worked on five years.
Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to get hired in a job where I can use my skills? Due to arthritis, I can’t work retail because I can’t stand for long periods of time.
How could I get hired with no references from former employers?
Thank you from any advice you might have.

Training program at insurance brokers - should I try?
I'm graduating with a BA in communication in May. I've been talking to this insurance brokers company that's located in my city for a bit and got a phone interview with them.
They are very transparent about not paying much. The lady I talked to said there's a three year training program that's organized in 3 phases. Phase one, for 6 months, I'd work at a service center, but mostly taking classes and getting insurance licenses. She said they pay for everything involved. After 6 months, I become a senior at the service center and train the new people, as well as work on proving myself.
If I do well enough, I'm promoted to phase 2. For this phase, I become an assistant for a new broker every 3 months. So for 3 months I'll be a P&C broker's assistant, then a Benefit Broker's assistant, then a Client Executive's assistant etc. This lasts 15 months.
Phase 3 I get to choose to follow the client executive path or broker path as a permanent position. This phase I mostly study to pass professional designation and get immersion experience. Once I graduate from the program, I get assigned to work on a team.
Start pay is super low - less than $30,000, then once I become a senior in phase 1 it's $30,000, in phase 2 it's $33,000, phase 3 $36,000 and after graduation $40,000 (although they say fully loaded with benefits it's $54,000). Also after graduation, she said there are team and company bonuses twice a year.
Benefits start from day of hire and are 4 weeks paid vacation/year, 14 paid holidays/year, 10 sick days/year, medical, dental, vision, 401k, FSA, life insurance, gym membership, valet parking, and I can't find anything about it online but she mentioned pension. It also requires a bachelors, which is what I wanted - a job that actually wanted my degree.
As someone with very limited experience (I only did 2 short internships in PR), should I go for this or look around? I'm able to live with my parents and plan to do that and save money for at least a year. The workplace is about 20 minutes away, but it's in the city so traffic may be really bad depending on my hours.
It's a smaller company so I was worried about growth, but the lady said they are doing this training program because so many of the workers there are old men that have been there since the beginning. They are all around the same age and all thinking about retirement. She said they decided as a company that instead of hiring brokers from outside, they wanted to train their own and build loyalty because I guess that's important to them. It only has 2 reviews on glassdoor, both of them positive.
Does this sound good for a new graduate? Someone in my situation that won't have to pay rent and has some financial leniency to allow me to experiment some?

Do local newspapers still offer internships/apprenticeships?
I graduated with a bachelor degree in intercultural studies in 2018, and want to start pursuing a masters in English, possibly with a focus on journalism, creative writing, or literature. I'm really interested in learning more about print journalism and gaining some experience that would get me a foot in the door with a lot of literary fields, but I don't think I currently have any relevant experience that would get me a paid job at a local paper. Closest thing would be honorable mention for my state in a national research essay contest when I was in high school, and maybe the recommendation of college profs who were all impressed by my writing. My question is this: do local papers often allow 'interns' to essentially shadow them and help out where needed? Paid or unpaid, I think the experience would be really helpful, but I'm wondering how to approach my local newspaper to ask if I could be part of what they do. And would I ask the editor directly?
Thanks for any advice.

Wife wants to start Health Coaching business
But she is using every excuse in the book to not take the leap. She has the credibility to start... BA in kinesiology from a good college, certifications up the wazoo, triathlon coach, personal trainer, group boot camp instructor for over 9 years and recently got her ACE Health Coaching certification. She is amazing with clients and they love her. When she left her boot camp position the class of 12 went to 3 because they liked her teaching style.
But since this is an online thing, it's completely foreign to her. She admits that since she has never done it officially before, its a confidence thing. She is finding reasons to stall. it took her 7 months to decide on a logo. She has a basic website that looks good and includes all the information someone would need, but in her eyes, it's not what other health coaches have, what happens if she makes a mistake... on and on... you get the jist...
I'm an independent general contractor and went through this myself when I started 16 years ago. I tell her just to start and it will work itself out. But she doesn't even know how to source clients for this.
What do you all think? Any advice is appreciated and welcomed!

Not sure what do next
I started out as an interior design major, decided I wasn’t as interested in design but more interior decorating. I changed my major to business management so I could get a degree in something more general. I then got a job working in Child Welfare for the state while also going to college. While working full time and going to school full time I decided to change my major to general studies so I could study whatever I wanted. Under this major I studied: interior design, business management, sociology, criminology, and history.
After I graduated from college I moved to Florida and got a job as an admin assistant for an architecture firm for 2.5 years. I am definitely just used as a receptionist. The work is unfulfilling and the people I work for are unappreciative and the environment is extremely negative. More negative than working in child welfare if you can believe that.
I have a lot of interests like photography, I took a coding class, and I love making cards and jewelry. I find myself to be pretty crafty and can learn to pretty much do anything. I like all of these things but can’t see myself doing them full time. I have thought about opening up an online boutique but it is not something I feel super passionate about.
I recently took a real estate class and am studying to take the state exam. I have always been interested in real estate, mainly staging homes. I am a little scared to move forward into real estate not knowing if I will like it or be good enough.
Right now I am just feeling stuck, I feel like I have zero motivation and my negative work environment has taken a toll in my personal relationships.
I am just not really sure what I should do. My ideal dream is to be a stay at home mom but that is not ideal because my SO and I are not in a place to have children yet.
Just trying to get some advice on what I should do next, maybe some career placement/interest tests anyone likes.

Corporations are endangering Americans. Trump doesn't care
From Boeing to Monsanto and beyond: this week has revealed the tip of the iceberg of regulatory neglect ‘Trump and his appointees have unambiguously signaled to corporations they can now do as they please.’ Photograph: Mark Ralston/AFP/Getty Images Why didn’t Boeing do it right? Why isn’t Facebook protecting user passwords? Why is Phillip Morris allowed to promote vaping? Why hasn’t Wells Fargo reformed itself? Why hasn’t Monsanto (now owned by Bayer) recalled its Roundup weedkiller? Answer: corporate greed coupled with inept and corrupt regulators. These are just a few of the examples in the news these days of corporate harms inflicted on innocent people. To be sure, some began before the Trump administration. But Trump and his appointees have unambiguously signaled to corporations they can now do as they please. Boeing wanted to get its 737 Max 8 out quickly because airlines want to pack in more passengers at lower fuel costs (hence the “max”). But neither Boeing nor the airlines shelled out money to adequately train pilots on the new software made necessary by the new design. Nonetheless, Trump’s FAA certified the plane in March 2017. And after two subsequent deadly crashes, the US was slower to ground them than other countries. Last week Facebook admitted to storing hundreds of millions of Facebook users’ passwords in plain text that could be searched by more than 20,000 Facebook employees. The admission came just a year after the Cambridge Analytica scandal revealed that Facebook shared the personal data of as many as 87 million users with a political data firm. In reality, Facebook’s business model is based on giving personal data to advertisers so they can tailor their pitches precisely to potential customers. So despite repeated reassurances by Mark Zuckerberg, the firm will continue to do what it wants with personal information. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has the power to force Facebook to better guard users’ privacy. But so far Trump’s FTC has done nothing – not even to enforce a 2011 agreement in which Facebook promised to do just that. Altria (Phillip Morris) was losing ground on its sales of cigarettes, but the firm has recently found a future in vaping. Because inhaling nicotine in any form poses a health hazard, the FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb wanted to curb advertising of vaping products to teenagers. Gottlieb thought he had Altria’s agreement, but then the firm bought the vaping company Juul. Its stock has already gained 14% this year. What happened to Gottlieb? He’s out at the FDA, after barely a year on the job. Wells Fargo has publicly apologized for having deceived customers with fake bank accounts, unwarranted fees and unwanted products. Its top executives say they have eliminated the aggressive sales targets that were responsible for the fraud. But Wells Fargo employees told the New York Times recently that they’re still under heavy pressure to squeeze extra money out of customers. Some have witnessed colleagues bending or breaking internal rules to meet ambitious performance goals. What has Trump’s Consumer Financial Protection Agency done about this? Nothing. It’s been defanged. This week, a federal jury awarded $80m in damages to a California man who blamed Monsanto’s (now Bayer’s) Roundup weedkiller for his cancer, after finding that Roundup was defectively designed, that Monsanto failed to warn of the herbicide’s cancer risk, and that the company acted negligently. It was the second jury in eight months to reach the same conclusion about Roundup. Roundup contains glyphosate, a suspected carcinogen. Cases from more than 1,000 farmers and other agricultural workers stricken with non-Hodgkin lymphoma are already pending in federal and state courts. What has Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency done about glyphosate? In December 2017 its office of pesticide programs concluded that glyphosate wasn’t likely to cause cancer – although eight of the 15 experts on whom the agency relied expressed significant concerns about that conclusion, and three more expressed concerns about the data. These are just tips of a vast iceberg of regulatory neglect, frozen into place by Trump’s appointees, of which at least 187 were lobbyists before they joined the administration. This is trickle-down economics of a different sort than Trump’s corporate tax cuts. The major beneficiaries of this are the same big corporations, including their top executives and major investors. But these burdens are trickling down as unsafe products, fraudulent services, loss of privacy, even loss of life. Big money has had an inhibiting effect on regulators in several previous administrations. What’s unique under Trump is the blatancy of it all, and the shameless willingness of Trump appointees to turn a blind eye to corporate wrongdoing. Trump and his Republican enablers in Congress yell “socialism!” at proposals for better balancing private greed with the common good. Yet unless a better balance is achieved, capitalism as we know it is in deep trouble. Robert Reich, a former US secretary of labor, is professor of public policy at the University of California at Berkeley and the author of Saving Capitalism: For the Many, Not the Few and The Common Good. He is also a columnist for Guardian US

A man has shot and killed his pet zebra after it escaped from his ranch in Callahan, a town in Florida. The animal, reportedly named Shadow, broke free from Cottonwood Ranch and ran down a main road, chased by several vehicles.Witnesses said the zebra was eventually cornered in a cul-de-sac around two miles from the ranch, where the owner shot and killed it.Bill Leeper, the local sheriff, said he understood that Shadow was injured during the escape and that the owner chose to euthanise the zebra while police officers were at the scene.Witnesses told WJXT-TV that the animal did not appear injured but the decision was made to kill it so that it could not hurt anyone.“I had to stop and think a minute,” Jenee Watkins told the news outlet.“It’s not every day you see a zebra trotting through your neighbourhood.”Officials have confirmed that the owner did not have a valid license to keep a zebra on his ranch.A state permit is required to own and keep a zebra in Florida. It is unclear whether he will face charges over the lack of permit.Officials said the investigation into the animal’s escape and death was ongoing.

Boeing's MCAS anti-stall system, which was implicated in the October crash of a 737 MAX 8 airliner in Indonesia, was also activated shortly before a recent accident in Ethiopia, a source with knowledge of the investigation said Friday. The information is among the preliminary findings from the analysis of the "black boxes" retrieved from Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, which crashed southeast of Addis Ababa on March 10, killing 157 people, the source told AFP on condition of anonymity. The information retrieved from the plane's voice and data recorders was presented Thursday to US authorities, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the source said.

US woman kidnapped in Afghanistan says husband's abuse was just like captors'
Caitlan Coleman says her Canadian husband, Joshua Boyle, was violent towards her before, during and after their kidnapping Caitlin Coleman leaves the Ottawa court house in Ottawa, Ontario, on Wednesday. Photograph: Lars Hagberg/AFP/Getty Images A Canadian man who was kidnapped with his wife in Afghanistan was controlling and violent towards her before, during and after their five-year hostage ordeal, she told a Canadian court on Friday. Caitlan Coleman, 33, gave testimony for a second day at the trial of Joshua Boyle, 35 who faces 19 criminal charges, including sexual assault, unlawful confinement and uttering death threats. Coleman was pregnant when she and Boyle were kidnapped by a Taliban-linked group while backpacking in Afghanistan in 2011. They spent five years as hostages, and had three children together before they were rescued by the Pakistani military. Coleman testified that during their captivity in the hands of the militant Haqqani network, Boyle dictated all aspects of her life. His behaviour “was just like my captors’”, she told the court. “I was never to disagree with him, even on small things,” she told the court. “In the past, he made it clear he didn’t feel any guilt hurting me.” Coleman, dressed in a white blazer, black dress and black headscarf, spoke through video link in an adjoining room in order to avoid being in the same room as Boyle. She had travelled from Pennsylvania, where she currently lives with her family, to testify. Boyle, wearing a navy blazer and maroon pants, sat at the front row of the courtroom, frequently taking notes on a yellow legal pad. He was briefly joined by his parents. Coleman described a pattern of abusive behaviour that culminated in a vicious assault after the couple had returned to Canada, in which Boyle demanded sex then hit her when she refused. She told the court she felt “very, very frightened” during the 27 November incident. “Josh told me to get on the bed. He took ropes he kept in a bag … and he started to tie my hands and legs.” Boyle sexually assaulted her, then refused to release her, Coleman told the court. “He said he couldn’t trust me, so he wasn’t going to untie me,” she said. She was only able to free herself after Boyle fell asleep, she told the court. “Looking back, I should have tried to leave,” she said. “But I didn’t.” In her previous testimony, Coleman had described a “rollercoaster” relationship with Boyle, whom she met at age 16 in a Star Wars-themed online chatroom. “He was my first kiss,” she told the court on Wednesday. Coleman quickly fell in love with Boyle, but she told the court that he became an emotionally and physically abusive partner, critiquing her drinking and interactions she had with men. Coleman told the court that the abuse continued in Afghanistan, where the final two years of captivity were the worst. He would choke, bite and spank her as punishment, she said. While in captivity, Boyle demanded she remain in a bathroom stall for extended periods of time – telling his wife he couldn’t stand the sight of her. Coleman testified that Boyle also joked about killing her by lighting her on fire or spilling cooking oil on her. “This was probably the darkest period of my life,” she told the court. During their five years as prisoners in Afghanistan, the couple and their small children are believed to have been shuttled between more than 20 locations. The court had previously heard that Boyle’s violence continued after the couple returned to Canada. Coleman testified that he would often hit her and demand sex; on one occasion, he forced her to swallow powerful sleeping medication, she testified. “He stood in the bathroom and watched me take them that time … I took them because I knew that if I didn’t he would hit me harder,” she told the court on Wednesday. On Friday Coleman told the court that when the couple was back in Ottawa, Boyle gave her a detailed list of rules dictating her diet, weight, appearance and frequency of sex. “I would be punished if I did not follow this list,” she testified, adding that Boyle withheld meals from her, and threatened corporal punishment if she did not comply. Coleman told the court that the rules required her to address her children as “Sir” and “Madam”, “so I could understand I was beneath everyone.” During her testimony, Coleman also said her former husband was paranoid about reports of the family in the media. “He was so focused on the fact that world’s eyes were on us … he said we have to look like a happy family,” she said. Coleman told the court that during interviews, Boyle – once an aspiring journalist – attempted to control the narrative of the couple’s time in Afghanistan. “He would give verbal or physical instructions about what could be answered … what story we could tell or what part of captivity we could talk about,” said Coleman. The 19 charges against Boyle are all related to alleged events after the family returned to Canada. Coleman was the alleged victim in 17 of the offences; a publication ban protects the identity of a second alleged victim. The trial is expected to last eight weeks.

UPDATE 1-Israeli troops wound Palestinians, anniversary rally approaches
Israeli troops shot and wounded 10 Palestinians on the Gaza border on Friday, Gaza medical officials said, as Israeli tanks massed on the eve of a huge rally to mark the first anniversary of the start of the deadly protests. Around 200 Palestinians have been killed and thousands injured by Israeli fire at the protests, Gaza medics say, as the demonstrations turned into an often deadly standoff between Gazans hurling rocks and petrol bombs and Israel troops on the other side of the fence. Israel defends its use of lethal force, saying that its troops are defending the border and Israelis living near it.

A look at Sunday's local elections in Turkey
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey is holding local elections on Sunday that are seen as a test of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's popularity amid a sharp economic downturn. Erdogan, who has not lost a vote since his party came to power in 2002, has cast the elections as a "matter of national survival" and has been campaigning for a strong mandate that he says would come as slap to Turkey's enemies. If his party sweeps municipal seats, Erdogan's dominance would be further solidified with his grip on the presidency, parliament and local administration. But a loss in major cities could signal a crack in his party's long hold on power.

Pope signs law to prevent child abuse in Vatican and its embassies
Although the city state within Rome is tiny, and very few children live there, the sweeping legal changes reflect a desire to show that the Catholic Church is finally acting against clerical child abuse after decades of scandals around the world. It is the first time a unified and detailed policy for the protection of children has been compiled for the Vatican and its embassies and universities outside the city state. The law sets up procedures for reporting suspected abuse, imposes more screening of prospective employees, and sets strict guidelines for adult interaction with children and the use of social media.
